THE SPANISH TOWN Ministers Fraternal in addition to their spiritual guidance is going to adopt four inner-city communities in St. Catherine to assist them in tangible ways.
Bishop Rowan Edwards, chairman of the fraternal, said the areas earmarked are Tawes Meadows, Ellerslie Garden, Shelter Rock and Jones Avenue. He said that the fraternal, having gone into these communities, has found that there is a high level of unemployment and hopelessness which often times turn to criminal work and they intend to stop that.
MORE HOPEFUL
"We are going to assist them with skill training, homework centre, block making enterprise, cosmetology, computer training and other businesses that will make them think more hopeful of themselves," Edwards said.
He said contacts have been made with donor agent Food For The Poor, which has vouched to support the venture scheduled to start very shortly, and that the fraternal will also be contacting the Jamaica Social Investment Fund and UNICEF to get their input as the aim is to broaden the programme as time goes by.
MEANINGFUL GESTURE
Member of Parliament for Central St. Catherine, Olivia 'Babsy' Grange, says the gesture by the Fraternal is very meaningful and also very historic. She said she is glad that the church is giving more than spiritual guidance as the communities need to get the resources to make them better. She added that while there are bad persons, all were born innocent, and efforts such as this will work wonders for the communities.
She was attending the city wide crusade recently put on by the fraternal in Spanish Town under the theme 'Exaulting Christ In The Midst Of The Crisis'.
She told the gathering that with Christ in the vessel no more mistakes can be made. And that she intends to work and support the efforts being made by the church leaders, and that it will be endorsed by persons in the communities.
