Fraud felon faces court again

TASHIEKA MAIR, Star Writer

WESTERN BUREAU

A MAN, WHO was convicted in another parish for fraudulent conversion in relation to a motor vehicle, has again found himself in a similar position.

Bryan Brown, 42, a technician and carpenter of Barrett Town, St. James, appeared before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday facing a charge of larceny by trickery and was granted $300,000 bail with surety.

Allegations are that in February this year, Brown told the complainant he knew of a Toyota Corolla that was being sold for $350,000 by someone in St. Mary. Pursuant to an agreement made between the two, they met, along with two other persons at the Montego Bay Revenue Department office, where the complainant handed over the full sum of money. He was subsequently given documents for the vehicle and the car keys. He was later taken to Spot Valley where he got the car.

Further reports are that in May, the police stopped the complainant and when shown the documents, informed him that there were some irregularities. As a result the complainant told Brown that he wanted a refund.

On June 11, the accused told the man that he had found someone who was willing to buy the car and told him that he wanted to borrow the car to show it to the prospective buyer. However, when the accused did not return the vehicle, the complainant visited his home where he was told that he would get the refund when the car was sold. The complainant, however, disagreed and later reported the matter to the Barrett Town police.

The police informed the complainant that he should not sell the vehicle but instead should take the car to the station but that was not done. He was held by the Wakefield police who later handed him over to the Barrett Town police.

Defence attorney Morrel Beckford told the court that his client had already given the complainant $250,000. He said that his client was legitimately seeking sale for the car so he could refund the complainant.

Mr. Brown is to report every Monday and Thursday to the Barrett Town Police Station and is to return to court on July 26.
