EMPLOYERS AND THEIR workers don't always get along. But Dorothy Davis, a chef, says her boss took it one step too far.
Their rocky professional relationship ended on a sour note on June 3, when, according to Davis, she was slapped in the face. "Me an him always a argue cause 'im want mi fi do other tings, mi come fi cook and 'im want mi fi stay back," she said.
Davis was employed as a chef in a restaurant and bar, but says her employer often demanded that she work beyond her hours and do other odd duties. She told the STAR, "'Im want mi fi stay back an' jus' pay mi $1000, but mi haffi pay $400 fi mi taxi fare outta dat. Mi might poor, but mi ambitious an mi naw work fi dat, cause mi nuh hungry. When mi refuse, 'im tell mi seh everyting mi talk bout money."
In relating her version of the story, she told THE STAR, "Mi come in bout 4 o' clock an 'im tel mi fi sit down. 'Im ask mi if mi come fi mash up di place an mi ask 'im why, an 'im seh if mi nuh know seh mi fi boil fg soup. Me tell him seh im musn't tell mi no fg badword." She said following this she was slapped in the face.
She continued, "Mi go as a chef an 'im want mi fi tek stock an mek sure seh everyting organise. Him pay mi $6,000 a week and want to push mi around. Di way how mi angry mi prefer if 'im did jus fire mi. Mi want people fi see how mi boss treat mi."
Davis feels it is unfair for workers to undergo abusive treatment just "to get a likkle dolla. Jus fi a pot of fish tea ... " She told THE STAR that she felt particularly disrespected because she saved and attended B & E Catering. "Mi spen mi money an get certified an' a dis mi get?"
But Davis is planning to use this challenge to better her life. "I'm going to set up something for mi self, but mi slow up cause mi no have no job." Mi jus want di government fi know wha people a go through."
Davis told THE STAR that she reported the incident to the police. When contacted, the Half-Way Tree police confirmed that the matter had indeed been reported, but the accused had not yet been served with a summons.
