HAVE YOU EVER wondered what artistes wanted to become when they were growing up?

Let's start with deejay, Ninja Man. He clearly stated that since a young age, he wanted to become a 'bad man'.

"I did want to be a real bad man. Me did want to be like Jimmy Cliff in Harder They Come," he said.

Did he fulfil his dream? He says, "Yeah, but it wasn't the right thing still. That's why so many things happen. When me look pon how dem a pressure music and a say music a cause violence, that's not true. When a song get old and stale, people forget bout it, but a movie never dead yet.

"Back when me when deh grow up, the artiste dem never used to a deejay about gun. Dem sing about 'willie bam skeng'. A since of late people start sing about other things and a me start deejay about gun and people follow. After me watch Harder They Come and see Jimmy Cliff, me say 'no man naw dis me', so me grow up like a bad man."

MORE MONEY

However, apart from Ninja Man, other artistes had pretty orthodox plans when they were growing up. This may come as no surprise, but here goes: Macka Diamond wanted to become an accountant and says if it wasn't for her love for music, that's what she would be doing.

"When I was going to Holy Childhood (High School), I wanted to be an accountant. I wanted to work at NCB because that was the bigger bank. There was a Scotia nearby to the school to, but me a say to myself, 'dah one deh too small, so me waan work a di big bank'. Me did figure say the bigger it is, the more money in there," she said.

She says she did business subjects, including, accounts, shorthand and principle of business (POB) to help her toward her dream: "Me did love dem subject deh still and I was really going to the bank to work but me used to skull class fi go deejay, so I just pursue music instead."

Deejay Queen Paula says she was well on her way to becoming a nurse before she decided to do music. "When I used to go to Pembroke Hall Secondary, they taught child's care there and I wanted to become a nurse afterwards. I started looking at teaching or nursing. Music was easier and financially better and I loved the vibes, so I ended up doing it as a profession. When my father was ill, I was good at taking care of him and I am good at taking care of people in general," she said.

Selector, Hotta Ball, also wanted to become an accountant. "My father is an accountant, so growing up and seeing him do that, made me want to do it too. But I loved music and I ended up doing this instead," he said.

Then there is reggae artiste, Lutan Fyah who says he wanted to become a footballer. "I always aspired to play football but music means better for me. Music gives me an opportunity to express myself and talk about how I see life and certain situations," he said.

However, it is Danger Zone's Pennybling, who was the biggest surprise of all. In a previous interview he spoke of his love for animals, and why he wanted to become a marine biologist.

Pennybling says, 'At first I wanted to become a marine biologist, but eventually music start take overÉMe did start listen to some sound clash tape and plug in the mic inna it and it eventually broke up me grandmother record. Then me did start tief out and play ah event, so ah so me come fi get kick out a school because ah sound. When me shoulddah study me deh a dance. So ah so the marine biologist dead.'
