Things that should not be

YOU EVER LOOKED around and noticed the number of things happening that really shouldn't be happening? I have, and it's scary. Sometimes when I ponder the reality within which we exist, my entire system gets confused. I get 'knock-knee' in my eyes and my feet get 'cross-eyed'; my heart jumps from 'left-chest' to 'right back', stops going 'buduff' and starts going 'duffbu'. In other words, everything gets cross thread, mixed-up, upside, downside up.

I know this is Jamaica 2006 and everything is everything. Yes, everything is good, everything is bad and everything is in between - all at once. But there are some things that should never, ever happen. Some things just should not be. For example, dunce people should not teach.

Anybody who reads this will agree with me that there are some wonderful men and women doing excellent work as teachers, but there are also many whose presence in a classroom should be illegal; unless they are there to learn. I have met people who collect salary as teachers every month and cannot speak one complete sentence in Standard English - the official language of instruction. And, to add insult to injury, hundreds of untrained or unqualified people are stuck in classrooms all around Jamaica complicating the lives of children and blighting this country's future. I really feel strongly about it. Dunce people should not be allowed to teach. And criminals should not be police. And vice versa; criminals should not teach and dunce people should not be police. I also think that teachers should not beat children. And police should not beat big people, especially women.

In addition, I believe if a man has been accused of wrongdoing and he has been found innocent and cleared by a court of law, he should not be prevented from reclaiming his job, or his United States visa. So I am glad Senior Superintendent Reneto Adams is back on the job (hush Supe, sorry ah cyaan help yu wid di visa). The fearsome and verbose officer is back in uniform and has been assigned to go and gather intelligence. I hope he can bring it in alive.

Maybe Mr. Adams will find enough intelligence so he can share it up among the Island Special Constabulary Force members also known as 'blue seam' policemen. They seem to be building a fast reputation as men who beat up on women. How dem love beat so? The way those men in blue have been behaving lately, you would think that ISCF means 'I Specially Come to Flog'.

The problem with teachers is more complex, but I have a friend who insists that the involvement of overseas personnel is helping to fix the police problem. He feels that the chaps from Scotland Yard will help the police to apprehend the numerous criminals who are currently employed in the police force and giving the majority a bad name. I don't agree. I feel it doesn't say much for our progress as a nation if we have to go back to a situation where men from Great Britain run things. But my friend is adamant. He says when people complain about police excess, even if Lucius wants to be a doubting Thomas, Mark won't Shield them! What you think?
