Seniors need help with rebuilding home

RUBY HALL AND her son are living dangerously. The two have been living in a partially exposed house since Hurricane Ivan in 2004.

The 93-year-old woman and Alfanso McKenzie, her 73-year-old son have tried to rebuild their home which is located at 35 1/2 at High Holbourne Road in Central Kingston, but with little success.

"I started to rebuild a section myself but it not good enough," she said.

Hall added that people and agencies have promised to assist them with rebuilding but they are yet to provide the money. "Dem (a church) promise us some money but I don't get it yet," she said.

While they wait, three bedrooms and the dining room have been exposed to the various weather elements including hurricanes.

With the hurricane season declared open since June 1, and predicted to be quite active, the two are worrying that they may lose the remainder of their home. A small section of the house was saved from the destruction and that is where the two now live.

They are pleading for assistance as they are unable to work and so cannot afford to rebuild most of the building.

Anyone wishing to assist them may contact McKenzie at 349-9201.
