Woman faces charges on ganja condom-bust

SACHA WALTERS, Staff Reporter

A WOMAN DENIED any responsibility for marijuana which the police allege she was attempting to transport in condoms to Curacoa.

Sarah Young, the accused, who was arrested and charged with possession, dealing and taking steps to export marijuana appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday.

The allegations are that on the morning of June 20 at the Norman Manley International Airport an Inspector, with the Narcotics Division took the accused to an office and searched her luggage after she saw her acting suspiciously.

The officer found nothing illegal. The court heard that Young remained seated during the search and when she stood to accompany the officer to a smaller office a condom fell from between her legs. She said she did not know how it got there. When the officer was about to frisk her Young allegedly placed her hand in front of her, lifted up her skirt and removed a cylindrical shaped parcel in a condom and placed it on the table before the officer. The items were seized and taken to the forensic lab.

Young was escorted to the Kingston Public Hospital and with her consent was x-rayed and an oral swab taken. The x-ray revealed nothing.

Norma Linton QC, Young's legal representative said that nothing was found on her client. "At no time did she lift up her skirt and remove anything at all," said Linton.

Linton questioned what proof the authorities had that it was marijuana.

The officer presented the receipt from the forensic lab which indicated that it was 7.53 ozs of the substance and the official forensic certificate will be available in the future.

Linton told the court that Young buys and sells clothing with her daughter all over the island and has never been in any trouble with the law. She has a fixed address where she lives with her children and at no time has she had marijuana.

"I respectfully ask for bail. She'll even report every day," Linton said.

Resident Magistrate Georgiana Frazer granted her bail of $30,000 with a surety and said that it was only because it was a small amount of marijuana. "Otherwise I would not grant her bail," she said.

Young was ordered to be fingerprinted, surrender her travel documents, a stop order was made and she was ordered to report to the Narcotics Police every Monday and Friday between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The case will be mentioned on July 11.
