Entertainer Ms.Ting. - FILE
DESPITE PLEAS FROM the complainant, Kasnique Austin, 21, to discontinue the trial of dancehall artiste Ms. Ting, presiding Resident Magistrate Georgiana Frazer refused to throw out the case.
"There are some things that are beyond complainant and accused when the state is involved ... I don't know if this is something that can be brushed under the carpet with a handshake and forgiveness," said RM Frazer.
STABBED WITH SCISSORS
The court heard that on April 22 about 1:30 a.m. both Austin and Ms. Ting, who real name is Natesha Lindsay, were attending a party on Bob Marley Boulevard in Coorville Gardens, when the complainant stepped on Ms. Ting's toe. Austin was pushed and an argument ensued.
The court heard that Austin left the party and was walking with her two-year-old daughter in hand, when she was stabbed from behind with a pair of scissors. She was subsequently admitted to the Kingston Public Hospital for three days.
Ms. Ting's lawyer, Hugh Faulkner, argued that matters such as this, where both accused and complainant lived in the same community, and have connections through family and friends, are best settled without charges as not to create "bad blood".
But the judge charged that adding to the severity of the attack, the fact that the complainant had her two-year-old daughter in hand and that Ms. Ting has not even admitted to the offence, she could not discontinue the trial.
COUNSELLING
"Even with God our father, we have to acknowledge our sins, before there can be penance," charged RM Frazer.
Ms. Ting was then asked to enter a plea, andshe pleaded guilty.
"Guilty, Your Honour. I am sorry for what happened, I have a son and I regret everything ... I swear on my son's life that this will never happen again," Ms. Ting said.
Regardless, RM Frazer would not throw out the case, instead setting a trial date for July 28.
In addition, the judge ordered that Ms. Ting undergo immediate counselling for an apparent anger management problem, following a recommendation from the court's probation officer.
