PROMINENT NEWSPAPER COLUMNIST Mark Wignall may be in trouble with traffic enforcement police since an incident where he was stopped by the police on Friday.
Wignall is said to have been driving a car without any road licence, or insurance. The police say that it was also discovered that the car's fitness had expired and Wignall failed to produce a driver's license.
A female passenger in Wignall's car is said to have stripped down to her 'panties' during the incident which took place along Balmoral Avenue in St. Andrew.
Police say that at about 12:30 p.m., traffic enforcement police from Harman Barracks were conducting random checks on motorists, when a grey Toyota Tercel with the registration plate 8674 DU, was stopped by police. A male driver and a female passenger were occupying the vehicle.
The police say that they observed from the windscreen disc (sticker) that the car had been unlicensed since March, 2006. When asked to present the relevant documents, the driver is alleged to have identified himself as Wignall and told police that the car was without licence or insurance. It was later discovered that the car's fitness had expired.
NUDITY
The police claim that the situation took a peculiar turn, as, upon informing the driver that his car would be seized, the female passenger is said to have begun acting boisterously, and reportedly refused to exit the car. Allegations according the officer in charge of investigations, Special Constable Garth Fisher, are that when the cops demanded that she exit the vehicle, the woman stripped down to her underwear, forcing the wrecker to take the vehicle with her partially nude inside, to the Half-Way Tree Police Station.
Officers say the woman continued to behave in a vulgar manner at the police station, and only complied with the police after being coaxed by a female officer to clothe herself and exit the vehicle.
The woman, who initially identified herself as Mary Lynch, of Havendale, St. Andrew, was later discovered to be 25-year-old Sharna Lynch.
Wignall was subsequently warned for prosecution for unlicensed motor vehicle, no car insurance, no certificate of fitness, and failure to produce a driver's licence.
His female passenger was warned for prosecution for indecent exposure, disorderly conduct, and failure to give a proper name and address to police.
"They were not charged, because the woman complained of foot pains and needed medical attention," said Sp. Con. Fisher. Summons were expected to be served on Wignall and Lynch yesterday.
Up to last night, however, officers searching for Wignall to serve him the summons, said that checks into the address that had been given to police, revealed that he had not lived at the premises for more than three years.
As a result police say, Wignall will incur a fifth charge, of failure to give a proper name and address to police. The summons has a tentative court date of June 16.
In the meantime the police are advising Wignall to contact the Transport Authority Police Post, at 107 Maxfield Avenue.
