There are many days when Nadine Edwards looks out on her verandah hoping that her son Maurice Maxwell will soon come through the gate. But sadly, he never comes because he was shot dead by a gunman last year while on his way from school.

Police report that Maxwell, 13, of Williams Lane, Spanish Town, St. Catherine was on his way home from school when a gunman walked up to him and said 'dis a fi yuh fada'. He reportedly shot the teenager in the head killing him on the spot before walking away.

And, Edwards is still trying to get used to the fact that her son died.

"He was my first child and sometimes I stand on the verandah looking out and expecting him to come and look for me, but he never comes," she said as the tears rolled down her cheeks.

"Mi a try fi cope wid the fact seh him gone, but mi jus can't get used to it," Edwards said as she wiped the tears from her eyes.

Like the members of community where he lived, Edwards described Maxwell as someone who looked out for her. She said although Maxwell lived in another part of the community, he always came to look for her.

"Him never lef mi out. Him always come look fi mi an' mi really miss him because a dat," she said.

Edwards too is unsure why anyone would want to kill her son. She said as far as she knew he was not involved in any wrongdoing neither was his father. She said Maxwell's killer fled the community shortly after the incident.

"Mi hear seh as him shoot him so him run out a di area gone a country gaan hide. Mi nuh know why him dweet because is not a bwoy weh did walk an' trouble people," she said.

Residents say the boy's killer ran from the community before they could catch him. They say they too have heard that he is hiding in rural Jamaica, but is unsure of where exactly.

Meanwhile, they are anxious for him to be caught soon as they want to see someone who has killed a loved one brought to justice.
