The bright side of six love

JACKASS SEY DI worl' no level. Jackass sey nuff people a sey bare bad tings bout de Reggae Bway dem since de match wid Henglan' whe day an' naa see de good side.

Marlon King cannot be an unhappy man. He may not be actively glad, mind you, but he cannot be sad not to have played in the historic match between Jamaica's senior football team and England on Saturday, after a falling out with the management and coaching staff.

It was always going to be a historic game, this first meeting of yard and Henglan', the place where many a Jamaican had gone to make a living and from where the core of the overseas driving force of the 1998 World Cup finals team came, courtesy of that migration many years before. It turned out to be historic, yes, but not for the reasons Jamaicans hoped. It was a historic whopping.

We got six love. And it could and should have been seven, seeing that England sent a penalty 'a bush'.

Now six love is not a petty score. It is closer to double figures than it is to zero, for one. For two it sounds like a game of dominoes, not football. And for three it means that England scored enough goals for each defender and the goalkeeper to be given one of their very own, with one to spare.

But the world is not level at all, because while we are looking at the bad side of the drubbing, we are ignoring the good.

The good you say? Of course there is good. For starters, we scored not only once, but twice, and not bad looking goals at that. This says wonders for our ability to find the net; it is only the side of the field that we have to work on now. Jackass is sure that there are quite a few teams which have never found the back of the net against England. We have. Two times too.

Then there are the remarks made by a couple English people after the game, one guy saying something to the effect that never has he seen a defence in such disarray at the international level. Now, you know we Jamaicans make our mark wherever we go. We are either very good or very bad. I therefore ask you, is it not fitting that a country which has produced the fastest man (or co-fastest, if there is such a word) in the world should produce a defence that is also world rated?

Tink bout it.

Think there is no good side left? Well, no one ran off. The contingent that went to England is intact, without even one person going to the bathroom at the airport and disappearing. This is not a minor matter; the shame of a six-love beating would have made many persons afraid to face the home crowd, that is, if they had not already made arrangements prior to the game. So our 'Byayz' have taken their beating like men, coming back with gear bags over their shoulders and smiles on their faces.

So don't overlook the good results of that match against England, our first and just maybe our last.

Jackass sey di worl' no level. Jackass sey a now de Captain a go tun up de heat pon Boxhill an' try bake im to nutten.
