A 23-YEAR-old St. Catherine woman who carelessly left her child at home on May 18, this year, pleaded guilty in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court to one count of child neglect. She is Erica McFadden of Dumbleholden in St. Catherine.
Investigating officers told the court that about 1 a.m. on May 18, residents of Southborough took a five-year-old boy to the Greater Portmore (One Hundred Man) Police Station and related a story that the child was seen wondering on the street. The police took the child into their custody and subsequently took him to a children's home.
Five days later McFadden turned up and told the police it was her child. She explained that she had taken the child to his father, but the child walked away. She was subsequently charged.
When she appeared in court, she pleaded guilty and explained to Resident Magistrate Lorna Errar Gayle that when she took the child to the house, there were neighbours nearby and the father was further down in the lane. The RM chided her for her uncaring attitude and told her that next time she should do better.
The investigating officer told the court that the mother does not care, as she is not working and does not want to take care of the child. McFadden's bail was extended to July 20 by which time the Probation Department is expected to complete an investigation into the matter and report to the court. McFadden will be sentenced on that day.
