AN ALLEGED LOVE affair gone sour is said to be the motive behind a man's attack on a female whom he claimed stole a cellphone from him after the relationship ended.
Thirty-seven-year-old Sydney McLennon of Summerhill, St. James, pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding and assault occasioning bodily harm.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to larceny from the person as he insists that the complainant had stolen his phone.
McLennon was granted bail in the sum of $30,000 when he appeared before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
McLennon, who is without an attorney, told the Resident Magistrate (RM) that he had a relationship with complainant two months before the incident.
According to him, after the relationship ended, the woman stole a cellphone and $8,000 from him.
He maintained that the phone in question is the one he had demanded from her on the day of the incident.
The RM ordered that a social enquiry report be done before she hands down her sentence. The case will be mentioned again on June 26.
Allegations against him are that on May 26, the complainant and her husband were at home watching television when McLennon entered the house with a machete and demanded a cellphone.
It is said that the couple tried to escape but he was able to grab the woman. He allegedly proceeded to chop at her with the weapon.
She sustained a cut as she held on to the weapon. They had a tussle, which led them outside the house, where the accused reportedly slapped the woman in her face and punched her in the mouth. He fled on seeing a police vehicle.
Further allegations are that the following day, the woman was standing in Point, St. James, when she was approached by McLennon, who took her cellphone.
He then used a pair of scissors to stab her in the forehead, chest and elbow. The complainant ran into a nearby shop where the accused allegedly used a stool to hit her.
