A strong touch of France

TEINO EVANS, Staff Reporter

The production that was put into the 'French Connection, The French Legionnaire' party was remarkable. The event was held at the C & W Golf Academy, Park Boulevard, New Kingston on Saturday. - WINSTON SILL

IT WAS AN all-out effort by the promoters of the ultra all-inclusive French Connection party held last Saturday at the Cable and Wireless Golf Club in New Kingston, as they gave patrons a strong touch of France.

Imagine entering a party, only to be greeted by men and women clad in French military attire. Yes, it would be intimidating at first to even attempt to walk past 'the French Foreign Legions' and their small military band, horsemen and canons.

However, after filling the eyes with some of the exhibitions, one could feel safer making one's way through the entrance, where the red-carpet treatment began, paving the path leading into the venue itself.

The spacious venue needed very little addition to become attractive, as the green grass and a pond in its midst created a wonderful scenery for patrons to stroll around and embrace.

Populated with bar-like tables for two, a dance stage area in the middle, selector's booth and many different food tents and bars, only a low turnout could have made the party French Connection, The French Legionnaire un-successful. However, that was far from the case.

The patrons were kept very occupied and entertained by the musical hits being played by individual selectors and sounds like the Renaissance Disco and Coppershot.

WHAT A FEAST!

When they were were not dancing, the patrons were feasting on on the food that was provided. There were soups, salads of all sorts, oyster in vinegar and peppered sauce, fried potatoes, an array of seafood, pastries and fruits.

At least five different bar areas were established around the venue - eliminating the inconvenience of patrons having to walk too far - a couple of which catered to specific needs. There was your 'champagne only' bar, two 'mixed drinks' bars, a general bar area and a 'tropical bar' that served only margaritas.

What else could patrons ask for?

The only problem of the night came when the selectors had to plead for patrons to occupy the stage area in the middle of the venue that was created specifically for dancing purposes.

"People, a girl time now, mek mi si all a di hot girl dem tek di dance floor, uno come man, uno a stay too far," one selector pleaded. At first, his appeal fell on deaf ears, but all that was needed was for the selectors to find the right tune, which they did.

The crowd began warming up with some dancehall and hip hop hits from the '90s, which featured songs on the Pepperseed rhythm, but it was not until they pulled selections from their soca collection that patrons (females especially), flocked to the dance area.

At minutes to 2 a.m., it was time for the ladies to strut their stuff on the dance floor. It was then that the madness began and as selectors eventually spun their way into the current dancehall favourites, including Stookie and Dutty Wine, there was nothing that could stop the climax. The stage created for dancing could no longer accom-modate the large number of patrons that were ready to dance so couples resorted to the open grass areas around the venue.

The vibes continued and it was not before some minutes after 4 a.m. that patrons were seen strolling towards the exit.
