THE MEN'S AND women's 200 metres lived up to their top billing at the third Jamaica International Invitational meet on Saturday night at the National Stadium.
Usain Bolt and Sherone Simpson scored contrasting victories. Bolt, the world leader in the event, had to dig deep to thwart American Tyson Gay.
Commonwealth champion Sherone Simpson took another giant towards becoming the undisputed Jamaican sprint queen when she handed Olympic champion Veronica Campbell her second defeat in less than two months.
Both events produced quailty sprinting with the men's 200m being the more exciting.
Locked with American Gay for the last 50 metres, Bolt produced a decisive dip on the line to edge out the American. He clocked a meet record 20.10, just two-hundredths of a second outside his season's best 20.08.
Simpson humbled a world class field which included 2005 World 100m champion Lauryn Williams of the United States, Campbell and Debbie Ferguson of the Bahamas who had earlier won the women's 100m.
The Stephen Francis-coached Simpson led from start to finish clocking an outstanding 22.14, well under her previous personal best of 22.54. It also beat by a large margin the 22.53 meet record set by Campbell last year.
Simpson was elated with her victory.
"I was drawn in front of Lauryn (Williams and Veronica (Campbell) so I knew I had to run the corner very well and I did. I am pretty satisfied with 22.14."
Other outstanding performances came from world 100m record holder Asafa Powell, Common-wealth Games 100m hurdles champion Brigitte Foster-Hylton, Americans LaShawn Merritt and Sanya Richards in the men's and women's 400m.
As expected, Powell was just too fast for his rivals and he equalled the world leading 9.95 set by American Justin Gatlin in Japan on Saturday.
Foster-Hylton who, like Powell is from the MVP Club coached by Francis, powered to victory in 12.69 beating American Damu Cherry (12.78) and her arch-rival, fellow Jamaican Delloreen Ennis-London (12.90).
