SPANISH TOWN
THERE WAS SHEER laughter in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday after a man, charged with possession and dealing ganja, told the court that 20 ounces make up a pound of his ganja.
David Davis, who was caught by the police on April 30 with one pound (half kilo) of ganja, pleaded guilty. RM Lorna Gayle asked him: "Can you tell the court how many ounces in a pound of ganja."
"Yes ma'am, a 20 ounce inna fi mi pound a ganja," he replied.
The RM tried to correct Davis by telling him that 16 ounces make a pound, but the accused would have none of it and insisted that there are 20 ounces in a pound. As persons laughed, court officers shouted "order".
Davis was fined $3,200 for possession and $1,600 for dealing. If the fines are not paid, he will spend 40 days in jail. Even when he was being escorted from the dock, he was overheard mumbling "a 20 ounce oh".
