Business House TT serves off next week

THE JAMAICA TABLE Tennis Association (JTTA) business house league will serve off next week Thursday, May 11, with action in the men's competition.

A total of 13 teams are enlisted to participate in both the men's and women's championships. The vast majority, 10, will battle for honours in the men's division.

One of the three female contenders, Ministry of Health, are entering the competition for the first time, while the other entries include Cable and Wireless Jamaica (C&WJ) and title holders West Indies Alumina Company (Windalco). Play among the women is slated to serve off a week later than their male counterparts.

There are no new men's teams, but the 10 outfits are drawn from nine companies as the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) have entered two teams.

Jamaica National are the defending champions in the men's category, in which the teams are divided into two groups of five. Besides the champions, former winners Jamaica Public Service (JPS), C&WJ, Windalco and JUTC II will play in one group. Last year's runner-up JUTC I heads group 2, which also includes the Ministry of Health, Bank of Jamaica, St. Ann Bauxite Partners and The Gleaner Company Limited.

Matches are scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays of each week with preliminary action in both competitions taking place under a round-robin format. The top two women's teams will challenge for top honours in a final, while the top two teams from each men's group will qualify for semi-finals. These play-offs are set for Sunday, June 25, at the University of Technology auditorium.

Individual titles in the business house competition will also be decided on the same day on which the finals are played and on this day, individual events in the business house tournament will also be played with com-petitors vying for championship titles in the men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles, and mixed doubles.

Defending champions for these categories are Joseph Dibbs (Quest Security Services) - men's singles; Andrea Wads-worth (Windalco) - women's singles; Oneil White and Marlon Chin (JUTC) - men's doubles; Wadsworth and Elaine Jarrett (Windalco ) - women's doubles; and Robert Gabay & Michelle Chin - mixed doubles.

Employees of companies that are not taking part in the team events may enter the individual events, while late entries for the team events may be made immediately by contacting JTTA president Keith Garvey at 433-1308, or Justin Allen at 541-7138 or 388-3183.
