ST. JOHN'S, ANTIGUA (CMC)
RYAN HINDS HIT a match-winning unbeaten century to spur the University of the West Indies Vice Chancellor's XI to a comfortable five-wicket win over the touring Zimbabwe team in their one-day match at the Jolly Beach resort yesterday.
Hinds, who last represented West Indies in April 2005 in a Test match against South Africa in Barbados, cracked 15 fours and a six in his 117 not out to lead the Vice Chancellor's to 325 for five off 46.1 overs to overhaul Zimbabwe's 324 for five off their 50 overs.
Hinds received good support from Jamaicans Chadwick Walton, a former Youth player who hit an undefeated 67 and opener Xavier Marshall, who made 54.
Walton struck 14 fours in his knock while Marshall compiled 10 fours and a six.
There were knocks of 37 from captain Shirley Clarke, a former West Indies youth captain, and 26 by Eric Baston.
Pacer Anthony Ireland, playing his first match of the tour after recovering from a broken hand sustained about six weeks ago in Zimbabwe, captured three for 52 from 8.1 overs.
Earlier, opener Piet Rinke cracked 113, slamming 14 fours and two sixes to help Zimbabwe to their challenging total.
Rinke was ably assisted by wicketkeeper batsman Brendan Taylor who made 80 with seven fours and two sixes, while Charles Coventry supported with 54.
West Indies 'A' team medium-fast bowler Richard Kelly took two for 46.
The UWI honoured former West Indies pacers Winston and Kenneth Benjamin, both unrelated, during the game.
The Zimbabweans travel to Guyana Thursday to oppose the West Indies in the third and fourth One-Day Internationals on Saturday and Sunday.
The home side has a 2-0 lead after the first two games at the Antigua Recreation Ground here last weekend.
