WESTERN BUREAU:
NEGRIL FC QUALIFIED for the 2006-07 Wray & Nephew National Premier League eliminations yesterday after-noon at the Frome Sports Ground in Westmoreland, when they defeated Montpelier 1-0 in the second-leg final to win the two-way tie 2-0 on aggregate.
Like he did in Sunday's first-leg game, which was played at the same venue, the prolific Howard Phillips got the all-important goal for his team midway the first half.
"We came here today knowing that all we needed to do was to avoid defeat but the players were determined to win and take the title in fine style," said Negril's coach Jerome Waite. "I thought we gave a disciplined performance today and all credit should go to the players."
For Negril's manager Junior Francis, the team's win takes him one step closer to achieving the dream he had when the team was founded in 2003. According to him, the team forms the basis for a larger plan to bring sports tourism to the resort town of Negril.
"We believe sports tourism could do wonders for a town like Negril and we believe that a successful football team would be a wonderful way to drive it," said Francis, who guided Negril to the Westmoreland division two title in 2003 and the Major League crown in 2004.
