Living on easy street

THE LEAD STORY in Tuesday's STAR spoke of the fact that several known 'coke-heads', prostitutes and car washers who once frequented the New Kingston area have mysteriously disappeared.

But while other 'street' persons in the area think they have been dumped elsewhere, the police are saying it is a job well done.

If indeed the persons were legally removed, it would be a job well done.

But we cannot be sure. Ever since the incident where street people from Montego Bay were dumped in St.Elizabeth, cases like these cannot be simply taken at face value.

And while it is admitted that some street people can be nuisances, they are humans nonetheless.

Even if the police are correct in this instance, there have been several other cases where street people have been treated like animals.

Organisations that take time out to lend a helping hand to these individuals should therefore be commended.

Volunteers and service organisations that donate their time to assist and in many cases, feed street people should be applauded for their efforts, simply because they find the time to work with a group of persons that have essentially been 'written off' by the rest of the society.

In many cases, people need to be more tolerant to street people as there are many who got to this stage because their lives took tragic, unexpected turns, twists that could be thrown our way anytime.
