SPANISH TOWN
RICHARD DUHANEY, A 37-year-old data technician, was remanded in custody when he appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday, charged with the murder of his wife Velma, whose nude headless body was found in bushes.
Detective Sergeant Derrick Ball of the Spanish Town Police Station, told RM Lorna Errar Gayle that on March 19, about 5:30 p.m. residents of Sligoville found the headless body of the 37-year-old school teacher.
Ball said that Mr. Duhaney went to the Portmore Police Station on March 21, and reported Velma lost and as a result he was called and later identified the body.
The detective told the court that Duhaney was later taken into custody and further investigation led to him being charged with his wife's murder. He said the Duhaneys had several quarrels and fights and that on March 19, the day he body was found, strange sounds were heard coming from their home in 3 West, Greater Portmore in the wee hours of the morning.
A car driven by Mr. Duhaney was given to one of his brothers. The investigating officer said forensic evidence was gathered from the car.
Attorney-at-law Peter Champagnie, who is representing Mr. Duhaney, told the court that the prosecution's case is weak. The RM disagreed and remanded Duhaney until May 2.
