Vibing with Gramps at Tuff Gong studios

BY TEINO EVANS, Staff Reporter

IT WAS WORK as usual for Gramps of Morgan Heritage, when The Star spent part of the day with him, at a jam session with musicians at the Tuff Gong Studio.

"Take it slow, let's take it slow," Gramps instructed his bass guitarist as they tried to catch a fast-paced rhythm for an instrumental that would open for the band on their tour.

They were rehearsing for an upcoming Caribbean tour that Morgan Heritage has scheduled for next week, where the group will be making stops in places like Anguilla, St. Martin, Barbados and Grenada. The remaining members of the group will meet up with Gramps next week for the tour.

According to Gramps, for many musicians, the greater part of any day is usually spent in studios, as it was rare to find a serious musician having an ordinary day.

Gramps says, on any given day, he has to try to find time to squeeze things into his very busy schedule, before hopping from studio to studio.

"First thing is fi wake up, and that vary, sometimes 10 a.m. or 6 a.m., depends on what kind of night you had. This morning mi get up bout 6:30, thief a likkle workout, hold a fresh up, grab som'n weh call breakfast, pay one and two bills and then head to the first studio," Gramps said.

HECTIC DAY

Gramps says, "Sometimes yuh work all three studios fi di day, is not a easy job as a musician. Sometimes yuh all reach a studio an buck up pon technical problems, like the protools all crash."

It seemed as though Friday was one of those days. Gramps was running crazy trying to correct some technical problems at the studio. He explained that the standard at which they produced the programme in the U.S. was much higher than what the studios in Jamaica were accustomed to.

Well, even when The Star left Gramps, he was still trying to sort out the problem, lamenting, "Wi have rehearsal tonight an then mi haffi guh drive to St. Thomas after."
