A COLOMBIAN NATIONAL, who was arrested in July last year and charged with unlawful possession of money, found himself in the same predicament after police found US$89,000 and $4.7million Jamaican at his home earlier this month.
Rueben Hernandez, 28, was granted bail in the sum of $500,000 when he appeared before Resident Magistrate Winsome Henry in the Montego RM Court on Tuesday. He was ordered to surrender his travel documents and is expected to report to the Freeport Police Station Tuesdays and Thursdays and will return to court on March 21. Last year his home on Leaders Avenue was searched and a total of US$355,000 was found. However, he was acquitted of that charge.
The latest allegations are that on March 3 at about 1:15 p.m., the police, armed with a warrant, went to Mr. Hernandez's home. A search of the premises was carried out and two plastic bags and a carton box containing the money were found in a closet. He was arrested and charged after he was not able to give a suitable explanation, as to how he acquired the money.
KIDNAP VICTIM
However, his attorney, Trevor Ho-Lyn, is arguing that the money that was found on this occasion is the same money that was returned to him, when he was acquitted last year. He further explained that he converted a portion of the money into the $4.7 million. He also informed the court that his client was kidnapped while residing in Columbia because he is from a wealthy family.
