FOLLOWING HER RELUCTANCE to take the stage and compete with four other girls in the Gleaner/Star sponsored Tiney Winey Contest, the crowd declared 20 year-old Olevia Sinclair most deserving of the victory.
Olevia, who hails from the community of Bull Savannah in St. Elizabeth, was seemingly shy to volunteer herself for the contest during the Supreme Ventures Jamaica Carnival at Pines Plaza in Junction on Saturday night.
FEEL GOOD
"I wasn't going up there still but yeah I feel good right now," she commented after her victory.
The St. Bess woman will have the opportunity to travel to Kingston for the finals and compete for the ultimate Gleaner/Star Tiney Winey title and a $10,000 cash prize.
The triumph of the BB Coke High School past student was not an easy feat. From the field of the five dancers, patrons, with the help of 'Vibes Master' Jerry D, selected their top three girls before selecting the top two.
In the top two, Olevia was up against the full-bodied and intimidating Opal Nichol, who seemed more likely to walk away as the winner. But in the end, her acrobatic skills and gyration, which had the males in a frenzy, were enough to edge out her rival.
Currently unemployed after leaving her job as a cashier less than two weeks ago, Olevia intends to further her education this September with a course of study in business.
In the meantime, however, she says she will be job hunting and continue to dance, read and write poems in her spare time.
