Woman time now?

THE COVER STORY of Sunday's Gleaner explored the results of a poll which asked 'If an election was called, who would you vote for and why? The article suggested that based on the results, Portia Simpson Miller's victory as the new PNP leader, has given the party hope for re-election.

Of those polled, 25 per cent said they plan to vote for the PNP because a 'woman time now', while 20 per cent said they would vote for the PNP to 'give Portia a chance'. Even though the issue of Simpson Miller's election has been explored time and again, it must be looked at again. Is it fair to expect that she will bring great change? How will people respond if there is no change? Is change even possible?

Though the answers to these questions are not known, one thing is, and that is the fact that people expect a lot from Portia Simpson Miller maybe too much. As a matter of fact, this is why they they would vote for her in a general election - to see what she can do.

Another thing is certain, and that is the fact that the next few months will be crucial for the new Prime Minister designate. For her, it is time to do or die time to prove herself, or face the wrath of Jamaicans who are tired of the same and are longing for a change.

What can we say but all the best.
