Larceny charges evaded

TASHIEKA MAIR, Star Writer
WESTERN BUREAU

ONE OF TWO men charged with attempted larceny had his charge dismissed after no evidence was presented against him when he appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Frankoy Johnson, who was jointly charged with Anthony Reid, pleaded not guilty while his co-accused pleaded guilty to the offence.

The allegations are that about 10 a.m. on March 30, a supervisor at a Courts store on Barnett Street, saw Reid emerging from between two refrigerators in the store and this aroused his suspicion. He asked Reid if he needed assistance with anything and Reid asked him the price of the cheapest DVD player.

The supervisor said he became even more suspicious when he heard the sound of plastic when Reid was walking. He looked between the refrigerators and saw an empty DVD box. He chased Reid, who was moving swiftly through the store and held on to him. He was searched and a DVD player, a microphone and a remote control were recovered from the front of his pants.

He was later handed over to the police along with the stolen items. He disclosed to the police that he and another man who he called 'Mark' whom he said worked at Courts, entered into an arrangement to steal the items.

He said Mark told him exactly where to collect the items and told him not to touch any of the items on display as that would set off the alarm. He was subsequently shown photos of the males that worked at the store and he pointed out his co-accused as Mark.

However, in court he did not confirm these arguments and therefore Johnson walked free.

Reid will be sentenced on April 25. RM Winsome Henry requested his police records and a social enquiry report.
