DESPITE A MEDIOCRE performance by number two seeded Glenmuir High, Dinthill Technical was unable to defeat the Clarendon-based school, in the fifth match in Round Two of TVJ Schools' Challenge Quiz. Glenmuir won the match with a score of 24 - 17.

COMMENDABLE PACE

Both teams began the match at a commendable pace, with the Glenmuir team showing immediate signs of experience and teamwork, as they communicated and executed in an almost blinding speed, getting about 2/3 of their questions correct. Although not a top seeded team, Dinthill proved that they were an equally strong competitor, scoring only one less that their opponents. The first section ended with a 6-5 lead for Glenmuir.

Though it seemed that Dinthill's knowledge base was equal to their top seeded opponents, a fatal flaw soon emerged, as Dinthill made no attempts at any language questions in the second (speed) section. They passed on 11 questions, compared to Glenmuir who only passed three questions.

The speed of Glenmuir allowed them to challenge more questions than Dinthill, and at the segment's end, they had a commanding lead of 16 - 11.

The experience of Glenmuir again became apparent, as Glenmuir carefully selected the questions that they knew for certain, and gave no incorrect responses.

They only scored eight points in the segment, but with a score of 24-11, they sat comfortably as the final minute drew near.

A surprising comeback from Dinthill began however, as the 'underdogs' gave three consecutively correct responses, moving their score to 17. Unfortunately, their efforts came a bit late, as the bells signalling the match's closure chimed, ending the match and the competition for Dinthill. The final score saw Glenmuir emerging as the victors, with a score of 24-17.

Despite their fairly fast pace, representing coach for Glenmuir, Clayton McCalla, criticised his team for their slow performance.

CLOSELY CONTESTED MATCH

"The team was slow and a bit overcautious, so what we will do is work on how to react faster," said McCalla.

Although they lost the match, Dinthill took the defeat gracefully, citing that their opponents played well.

"It was a closely contested match, and the team could have applied more as they were a bit relaxed, but we did fairly well in the face of such strong opponents, and it was a good experience, one which will guide us in preparations for next year," said Dinthill Technical's team coach, Michael Daley.
