A FORMER NATIONAL footballer was among three men who pleaded guilty to possession of an offensive weapon and were each fined $3,000 in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
He has been identified as Winston Griffiths, who appeared in court with fellow footballer Sheldon Batiste and Damion Wright, a welder.
If the fines are not paid, the three will have to spend 10 days in jail.
WARRANTS
They were taken in on warrants, which were issued when they failed to appear in court on Monday.
During Wednesday's hearing, their attorney Charles Sinclair, apologised for their absence saying his clients were in Kingston and had encountered car trouble when they tried to get to Montego Bay on Monday.
He further said that the men were never aware that carrying a knife in public was illegal and they had no criminal intentions; the knives were simply a form of 'style'.
AGAINST THE LAW
RM Winsome Henry reminded the three accused that it was against the law to walk or travel with weapons of an offensive nature and told them not to let such an incident happen again.
The allegations are that about 10:10 p.m. on March 9, the police were in Ironshore, St. James, when a car occupied by the three was stopped. They were searched and a knife was recovered from each of them.
