VENDORS AT THE Linstead market in St. Catherine, say they have nothing to worry about despite that for the second time in six months the Public Health Department of the Ministry of Health has threatened to close the market due to sub-standard sanitary condi-tions.
A few of the vendors at the market expressed the opinion that the threat of closing down the market is not real, because of the revenue it brings to the government
The vendor outlined a number of concerns including the charge that rubbish is not been collected on a timely basis and so it litters the place, especially on the eastern side bordering Fletchers Avenue.
They reported that the toilets in the market are flushed periodically, and that persons who use the facility during the interval between flushing, have to contend with a foul odour emanating through the receptacles. They said that it is impossible to sit in a normal position on the seats.
The roof of the market leaks and it is poorly lit. Lack of proper main-tenance is also seen in the way the floors are kept. At one time they used to be cleaned and greased frequently thus keeping down the dust which affects those who are asthmatic or have other respiratory problems.
They told THE WEEKEND STAR they are frequent victims of break-ins and robberies. The Linstead police said that lately they received no reports of robberies from the vendors. They further stated that incidents that have been reported to them in the past were brought before the courts.
