SPANISH TOWN
SEVERAL RESIDENTS ALONG Euston Drive in Willowdene, St. Catherine were in for a rude awakening recently when car thieves poisoned eight of their dogs.
According to one of the affected residents, Miriam Lindo, she was awakened about 3:00 a.m. by her German Shepherd named Quill who was barking as if someone was outside. She also heard other dogs barking. "I heard the dogs barking on the street and when I woke up about 6:30, I found my two dogs, Quill and Zhann and six other dogs belonging to neighbours, dead".
VAN TAMPERED WITH
Lindo said a check at a neighbour's house found a Toyota van tampered with and the rear window broken out. "It seems from all indications that the persons involved broke into the van, tried to start it and they failed and were about to push it but the dogs prevented them. So dem get revengeful and poison the dogs with meat."
She said she checked the area and several pieces of meat were seen. One of the dogs that was barely alive was rushed to a vet in Spanish Town, however it was too late. Another resident, Rose Baker, said she lost three dogs at the hands of the wannabe thieves. "I guess they came earlier in the week and map out the area and realised that lots of dogs were around and as such they came back in the night with the dog barking and poisoned them," she said.
SCARED AWAY
Rose believes the men were eventually scared away by a resident who was driving to work.
The Spanish Town police confirmed the deaths of the dogs and said their investigations have discovered that the dogs were indeed poisoned.
The police say they will step up their presence in the community to deter criminals from making more robbery attempts.
