ON TUESDAY, THE STAR had a story which spoke about a woman being detained after she was accused of giving away her four children.
In the story, there is the claim that the woman gave the children to a man in the community and one was molested.
For any well-thinking person, the thought of a mother giving away her baby or children is unfathomable. In fact, it is an act that ought not to be considered. But, the harsh reality is a woman is now before the courts for something that we thought unlikely.
Strangely though, it is not the first time the police have arrested a mother for neglecting her children. Late last year, several women in the St. Catherine South police division were brought before the courts for the same offence after their children were left on the road to beg. What is sad about these cases is that the children are always vulnerable and sometimes contribute to crime.
Although we blame the police for many things in this country, they must be commended on this occasion. It shows they are attempting to tackle one of the root causes of crime which is children left on their own.
But, while praising the police we hope that this latest drive is not a one-off thing but will be done on a continuous basis to ensure that the practice of neglecting children is a thing of the past.
