Keeping it in the family

Dear Pastor,

My neighbour has informed me that she is in love with her cousin. They apparently grew up together, and were always close, no matter what. They do spend a lot of time together. She is not seeing anyone and neither is he. I had my suspicions about the two of them, but kept it to myself. When she finally told me, I didn't know what to say.

I think that she is just lusting because he is an extremely handsome young man, and a lot of women find him attractive. Tell me pastor, is it right for her to feel that way about her cousin? I've seen the way they are always playful. It makes me wonder if they are both involved sexually. She was trying to get a reaction from me.

Dear D.,

Are you sure that you are not writing about yourself? Whether so or not, let me say that it is unwise for "near kin" to get married or to have any sexual relationship at all. The reason is that bad genes may cause their offsprings to be born with physical defects. I may also point out that the Bible does not support people who are near cousins to have intimate relationships.
