A MAN WHO SAID he was an ex-policeman was on Wednesday sentenced to three days imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to simple larceny when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.
Resident Magistrate Martin Gayle handed down the sentence to Garth Anderson who lives in the Corporate Area after he admitted to stealing a litre of Appleton rum.
Court files indicate that on March 5, the accused went into the Empire Supermarket on Cross Roads and took up a bottle of Appleton rum valued at $872. He reportedly passed the cashier and was heading out without paying for the item when he was stopped. He was arrested and charged.
When the matter came up for mention before RM Gayle, Anderson said he stole the alcohol because he was trying to get the money to go and visit his father who was ill. The accused who admitted he was an ex-policeman first said he was dismissed from the force because of problems with his address. He later changed his story to say he was indicted for stealing a gun but the charge was dismissed.
After hearing his argument, RM Gayle then sentenced him to three days imprisonment.
