Crime sells, prayer does not

THE EDITOR, Madam:

On January 4 the National Arena in Kingston, Jamaica, hosted a well-needed event. It was an event of all-day fasting, prayer and singspiration under the theme 'Heal the family, heal the nation', where persons from different walks of life gathered despite their denomination's beliefs. They had one aim on their minds which was to cry out to the Almighty Saviour to heal our land Jamaica.

There were speakers such as Bishop Herro Blair, our Ombudsman, Bishop Delva Davis, the person with vision of such events from Power of Faith Ministries in Portmore, and many others who delivered the word of God and advised the people about healing this country through mending those broken families with the help of God.

Now, can you believe that our major television stations were not present to air such a programme which needed to be in the spotlight? I can bet if it were something to do with crime and violence within our country they would be quick to cover it. Is it that crime sells? Aren't we tired of seeing the same thing over and over again? Why won't they show something that is uplifting to our country?

Listening to a very population radio station, I was thoroughly blessed as they ministered the Word and gave useful tips on how to mend those broken families which are quite rampant within this our society.

When visitors watch our television stations, especially the news, all that is showcased is crime and violence, but still when CNN and BBC talk about Jamaica and its high crime rate, we criticise. We complain that all they are doing is highlighting the bad aspect of the country, as if they don't have similar crime problems. What, are we the only ones allowed to do that? I mean, not even a word-of-mouth or a file footage to say such an event had occured! That's just a shame!

Really, where are we going as a country? I guess nowhere, because it's all about who can be 'Jamaica's number one' and who has more viewers. But how much do you care about your viewers? Do you feed them with uplifting news or news that sells (crime and violence)? Oh, it's just a shame!

I am, etc.,
