WOLMER'S GIRLS ADVANCED to the third round of TVJ Schools' Challenge Quiz competition after a match which saw them coming from behind to steal the win in the final segment.
The match which saw the Kingston based girls schools Wolmer's High and Merl Grove High square off proved to be quite competitive with the game ending 29 - 34 in favour of Wolmer's.
Segment one of the match ended with Wolmer's scoring six points while Merl Grove ended with nine points. Segment two of the match saw more focused attempts by the teams to secure more points. In this segment Merl Grove maintained its lead, however the team missed an opportunity to increase its score when it incorrectly stated that the OPR in the police force meant Organisation of the Police when it fact means Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR).
By the end of this segment Merl Grove had 23 points while Wolmer's Girls was close behind with 20 points.
In the final segment Wolmer's seemed to switch into winning gear and 'buzzed' their way to victory. The team got all of the seven questions it attempted correct.
Saunja Murray, captain of the Wolmer's Girls team said she was not worried when they were behind in the score. "We were worried about how we were going to play. But we played from behind a lot of times so we're used to it," she said.
The Merl Grove team indicated that they had put in a huge effort. "We believe we did our best. In the end it depended on our speed in the buzzer," Nichelle Muschette, captain of the team told THE STAR.
Kenneth Austin, coach of the Merl Grove team also said the buzzer segment was where his team lost the match.
Members of the Merl Grove team were Kameka Pryce, Stephiann Wray, Sade Buchanan and Nichelle Muschette.
Members of the Wolmer's Girls team are Saunja Murray (captain), Dominique Patterson, Renee McDonald, Jamieka Jackson.
