Dezrene Oliver points to the wound on her dog Butch. Ms. Oliver told THE STAR that her dog was shot by a policeman when he entered her home and the dog started barking at them in Mona commons in St. Andrew. - NORMAN GRINDLEY
THE COP SHOOTING the prize mongrel of a lady in Mona Commons, St. Andrew is a seriously funny story.
It is seriously funny that a dog, world renowned as man's best friend - in Jamaica can share the same fate as the Jamaican man/woman as far as justice is concerned.
Follow the reasoning.
And P has said I must make readers understand that we are not using words loosely here when we talk about 'seriously funny'.
Okay, you might have cracked a smile on reading the owner of the wounded dog, Dezrene Oliver's quote: "We nuh rich, but mongrel a dead out because a mange an' we have fi wi one whey brown and pretty and dem shoot him."
Funny too was Ms. Oliver transporting her prized dog in a pretty 'criss' looking Red Stripe box to the offices of THE STAR - and the dog has this 'poor-thing-look-at-me-look' on its face. Not sure if a dog in beer box is a great advert unless you stretched the mind to think that the dog drinks beer. Anyway, the point is if you did not get yesterday's STAR go find one, the picture is HUMAN.
But seriously, having had the laughs, think about the lady relating that the cop who was allegedly involved in the shooting of her mutt had taken off his identification number.
Why would he do that? He shot a dog for crying out loud, by accident [we hope] so why the secrecy?
I know said P, the cop was hiding his identity because dogs have rights too. Cops can't just shoot a dog and get away with it - the canine population will start blocking roads and demonstrating, chanting, sorry, barking 'we want justice'. C'mon people, dogs have rights too.
I fail to understand why the police would be abusive to the lady who was concerned about her dog being shot. I guess they must be perplexed about her concern because what with children being murdered and cops being attacked seemingly everyday, what is this lady's problem about her little mongrel dog?
And if a gunman had shot her dog would she have hustled down to the police station and then to THE STAR to show her injured 'best friend'. And would she have been demanding that someone pay the medical bills for her injured pet? P thinks not.
Well, maybe it is that the small things must matter as much as the big things. And that one day as a society we will understand that wrong is wrong irrespective of its magnitude. One day, some day, any day our little isle must change.
