THE 2006 WRAY & Nephew White Overproof Rum Skittles competition was launched last Sunday at Hughenden Plaza with 11 participating teams.
All contested the five-a-side one day competition and in the end, Dragon from Rollington Town blanked Track Price Plus 3-0 in the final to secure the Bejons Trophy and $5,000 cash prize.
Meanwhile, the Wray & Nephew competition has been divided into two sections. The six top-seeded teams will contest the Premier League and the remaining five will play in the Major League when both leagues commence on Sunday, March 12.
The Premier League teams are defending champions Eastern All-Stars, Rowe's Strikers, Cherry's Strikers, Track Price Plus, Dragon and Starliner.
The Major League comprises Galaxy, Waltham Strikers, The Dip, Olympic Strikers and newcomers Portmore Municipality Colours sponsored by Portmore's Mayor, George Lee. Notable absentees are House Of Peace and Meadowvale. 'Colours' are made up mainly of players who represented Meadowvale in the past season.
A breakdown of the prize money in the Premier League sees the winning team capturing $70,000, second $35,000, third $15,000 and fourth $7,500. Major League winning team $40,000, second $20,000, third $10,000 and fourth $5,000.
Matches start at 2:00 p.m. sharp and according to Skittles Federation president, Sam Allen, any team which does not have its full complement of 11 players present will forfeit the match to the other team.
Teams will gain three points for a win. If a team wins all eleven matches, they will gain an additional bonus point, ending with six points for the match. Each club will get three home games.
The winning Major League team will be promoted to the Premier League while the last placed team in the top league will be relegated to the Major League.
Present at the launching was David Hobson, brand manger White Overproof Rum at Wray & Nephew Limited. The company will sponsor the competition to the tune of $370,000.
