A 'DROP-PAN' seller was given a second chance by Senior Resident Magistrate Martin Gayle, when he received a suspended prison sentence in court on Tuesday.
Nichola Rose, an illegal 'numbers' seller of Wint Road, was brought before the courts on charges of illegal gaming and betting; abusive language, assaulting police, indecent exposure, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct. She also faced possible charges for claiming she was Nichola Johnson.
Allegations are that on February 14, 2006, Rose was caught selling 'Drop-Pan' along Wint Road. When police attempted to apprehend the accused, she allegedly became boisterous, stripping her clothing and cursing the officers. The police said she hit them repeatedly as they struggled to subdue her.
"Your honour, everybody know mi a di cashpot lady, all police buy from mi ... Mi nah lie mi cuss dem but is a lap skirt mi a wear so it come ina di mix-up," said Rose.
RM Gayle seemed moved by her honesty, but charged that she needed to find a legal means of making money.
"There is something genuine about you that I appreciate and I believe in second chances," said RM Gayle.
Rose was charged a total of $1,500 for abusive language and resisting arrest. For the charges of illegal gaming and betting, she was given a suspended sentence of two years imprisonment. The other charges against her were admonished and discharged.
"You are given a second chance, so you choose if you want to go to jail ... if you're caught again no one can save you. Go your ways," said RM Gayle.
