P'more council enters partnership

MAYOR OF PORTMORE, Councillor George Lee, has announced a partnership between the council and developers, for the creation of a fund for the upgrading of road infrastructure in the municipality.

"This fund will be quite useful," he said, "bearing in mind that WIHCON (West Indies Home Contractors) will be building another housing scheme shortly, we have two shopping complexes that are coming on stream shortly ... and we're now in the process of concluding agreements for a new hospital, so there'll be a tremendous amount of new activity and new businesses beginning this year, and into the next couple of years," the mayor said in a JIS release.

The mayor was speaking recently at a ceremony to name the thoroughfare from Mandela Highway to Braeton Parkway, popularly called I-95, the Municipal Boulevard. He said that the naming ceremony was truly significant.

He noted further, that the roadway would become even more important, as major development projects come on stream.

Meanwhile, Fitz Jackson, Minister of State for Finance and Planning and Member of Parliament for South St Elizabeth, said that the roadway has proved to be an important one for the municipality.

He said he celebrated the decision by the municipal council to put an official name to the roadway, one that would serve for generations. "The naming of the roadway reflects the coming of age of the Portmore community," he stated.
