TRANSPORT AND WORKS Minister, Robert Pickersgill has announced that permission has been granted from Cabinet to begin the compulsory acquisition of 10 acres of land at Jamworld in Portmore, to relocate fish vendors who are currently plying their trade along the Causeway.
In a JIS release, the Minister, who was touring the Portmore leg of Highway 2000 recently, explained to journalists, that the delay in relocating the fish vendors resulted from the breakdown in negotiations between the Government and the lessee of the property, thus forcing Government to take the route of compulsory acquisition.
Mr. Pickersgill also sought to provide answers to the vendors, many of whom came out to query the reasons for the delay in the relocation exercise.
They also expressed concern that once the highway was completed, persons would not be able to access the old road, along which they currently sell.
In response, Dr. Wayne Reid, Managing Director of the National road Operating and Construction Company (NROCC), explained to the fish vendors that there would be a slip road along the highway in the vicinity of the Marina, which would allow for motorists to get off the highway and make their purchases, until the relocation exercise is completed.
Dr. Reid pointed out that the relocation could happen in a matter of months. He explained that there were a couple of weeks, according to the law, before the Government could take possession of the new site, following which the contractor would begin the work.
