Man granted bail for robbery

A 25-YEAR-OLD Portmore man accused of robbing a woman in Caymanas Gardens was granted $100,000 bail to return to court on May 18. He is Dervan Smith from Edgewater.

The investigating officer told the court that about 4:30 p.m. on November 25, 2005, the complainant was walking in the Caymanas Garden area when Smith held her up at gunpoint and robbed her of $8,400 and her cellphone.

He was not seen again until Valentine's Day, when he was caught buying goodies at Super Plus Food Store in the Portmore Pines. The complainant pointed him out to the police and he was charged with robbery with aggravation.

Smith appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court recently and pleaded not guilty.

His lawyer told the court that Smith is gainfully employed and need not rob anyone. they attorney said it can be proven that Smith was at home on the day in question as no proper identification was done. RM Carol Edwards then granted Smith bail.

He is to report to the Greater Portmore police twice weekly.
