Jamaica's Stewart grabs spotlight

gainsville, cmc

JAMAICA'S KERRON STEWART produced a fine double win at the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Indoor Track and Field Championship Saturday that earned her the female performer of the meet award.

Stewart captured the Commissioner's Trophy as the top women's scorer after winning the 55 metres in 6.71 seconds and the 200 metres in 23.11, plus helping Auburn to second place in the 4X400-metre relay at the University of Florida.

She became only the third indoor double winner in Auburn history, joining other Jamaicans Lacena Golding-Clarke (1998), who won the 55m hurdles and the long jump, and Elva Goulbourne (2003), who won the 55m dash and the long jump.

"First of all, I would like to thank God, because without him I could not have done this," said Stewart following the 200 metres. The Auburn women's track and field team fell just short of winning their first ever SEC title, finishing second. The sixth-ranked Tigers finished with 96 points -- placing behind surprise champions Georgia (101.5) - in a grand effort by Stewart and her team.

Stewart, who was Carifta Games Under-20 champion over 100 metres in 2003 and U.S. Junior Collegiate 60 and 200-metre champion in 2004, edged Amberly Nesbitt (6.72) and Trinidad and Tobago's Kelly-Ann Baptiste (6.73) for the 55-metre title. Tahesia Harrigan of the British Virgin Islands (BVI) got sixth in 6.82.

CARIBBEAN WINS

In the 200 metres, Stewart emerged champion ahead of American Shalonda Solomon (23.15) and Baptiste (23.46). There were several other Caribbean wins at the meet, including Jamaicans Patricia Hall and Jovanee Jarrett, St Lucian Levern Spencer, and Guyana's Michelle Vaughn.

Hall led the 400-metre field with a 52.67 victory while the others posted strong field events victories.

Spencer logged a season's best 1.88 metres to capture the women's high jump ahead of Miruna Mataoanu (1.81m). Jamaican Shaunette Davidson and Grenada's Patricia Sylvester were joint fifth at 1.70 metres. Jarrett posted 6.31 metres to win the women's long jump over Marquita Aldridge (6.30m).
