I had to get back into the classroom - Brown

Babet Brown - CONTRIBUTED

LLUIDAS VALE

FROM A TENDER age, Babet Brown knew she would give active service as a teacher in her adult life. The fact that she worked for a time with Cable and Wireless Jamaica Limited did little to diminish that conviction.

She explained that she joined Cable and Wireless in 1986, two years after graduating from Shortwood Teachers' College. This was done largely through the prompting of her husband who worked for the company at the time. This came after three temporary teaching appointments at St. Andrew High School for Girls, Camperdown High School and York Town Primary in the Corporate Area. Her tenure at the telephone company was a not permanent one. She added with a smile, "I felt I had to get back into the classroom regardless of the lucrative fringe benefits being offered by Cable and Wireless".

In September, 1988, this pull of the classroom took her to her present teaching post at Charlemont High School in Linstead, St. Catherine. The school is near to Commodore district where she was born.

HARD WORK

Currently she heads the Geography and Social Studies Department at Charlemont. In addition, she serves as the coordinator for 5th Form students and as such she is the person responsible for the yearly graduation exercise. Her other duties include being in charge of external examinations, which include CAPE and CSEC subjects. In addition she functions as a marker of Geography for CAPE.

Mrs. Brown's has also used her expertise in other areas of school life in the past. Recently she acted as the Dean of Discipline and Students' Welfare when the incumbent, Mr. Harris Scott, went on vacation leave. She also serves her community, being a member of the Lion's Club of North St. Catherine.

Brown describes herself as a people person who stands for discipline and hard work. She emphasised that she is a firm believer in teamwork as it redounds to the betterment of the institution. She stressed that her main joy is seeing her students achieve.

Evidently she has been taking her own advice as through discipline and hard work she obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Geography from the University of the West Indies. At present she is pursuing a Master of Science Degree in Educational Leadership from Central Connecticut State University in the United States. It is said that a leader 'does the right thing'. This aptly describes the performance of Mrs. Brown in her chosen profession.
