Local track stars to shine at Gibson

Sherone Simpson

QUALITY performances are expected on the track when the 30th Gibson Relays takes place at the National Stadium tomorrow.

Rated as the Caribbean's leading relay carnival the event which begins at 9.30 a.m. tomorrow has attracted the best local talent from prep, primary, high, all-age and junior high schools, clubs and institutions.

There will also be 4x100m relay races for Special Olympians and the ever popular 4x100m for Masters.

Star attraction for the day is world 100m champion and 2005 Sportsman of the Year Asafa Powell from the all-powerful MVP track Club coached by Stephen Francis. Francis who was honoured with the Chairman's Award at last night's RJR Sports Foundation's Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year function, is expected to parade all the big guns from his club including World Championships 100m silver medallist Michael Frater, Olympic relay gold medallist Sherone Simpson, World Championships 100m hurdles bronze medallist Brigitte Foster-Hylton and national 400m champion Shericka Williams.

The MVP track club is expected to threaten the 38.20 seconds national record in the 4x100m for institutions men where they will get strong competition from G.C. Foster College and the High Performance Training Centre (HPTC) with world junior 200m record holder and World Champions 200m finalist Usain Bolt leading the charge.

HEAVYWEIGHT HOLMWOOD

Among the high schools all eyes will be on the heavyweight Holmwood Technical High male and female teams.

The Holmwood girls have been sweeping all before them in the 4x100m Under-19 and 4x400m Open for quite some time and this year will be no different. Coach Maurice Wilson is also expecting his team to conquer rivals in the 4x800m open.

Among the boys Holmwood also hold a strong hand in the 4x100m for Class 1 boys, 4x800m open and the 4x400m open. In fact, Holmwood are poised for an unprecedented sweep of all six high school championship events which carry commemorative Gibson Relays watches.

The other two championship events are the 4x100m and 4x400m for men's institutions. Other interesting events down for tomorrow are the Lucozade Mile for males and females .
