Top athletes on target for Gibson

TOP SENIOR AND junior athletes warmed up for Saturday's Gibson Relays, the Caribbean's biggest relay festival, with impressive performances at the weekend's University of the West Indies Invitational at the Stadium East field.

In what was the best organised meet this season, national 400m champion Shericka Williams looked very good in the 100m, which she won comfortably in 11.62 seconds.

Her U-Tech/MVP teammate Marcia Wollery, who ran in heat one, finished second overall in 12.23 seconds.

In the men's event, Mario Forsythe, also of U-Tech/MVP, won in 10.39 ahead of High Perfor-mance Training Centre's Melvin Mero and his teammate Nester Carter, both of whom were timed in 10.40.

HIGH JUMP CHAMPION

Former women's national high jump champion, Karen Beautle, competing unattached was first in this event with a leap of 1.83m while Claudie Calder of Forties International (1.65m) was second.

In the junior 100m, Jamaica College's (JC's) Winston Barnes topped Class One winning in 10.50 over Kingston College's (KC's) Andre Wellington (10.53) while Renee Roper of Vere (12.41) beat It Dat's Jodi-Ann Nelson (12.42) in the female equivalent.

Samantha Henry of Queen's (12.21) beat St. Jago's Latoya King (12.27) in Class Two while the St. Jago pair of Nastassia Walker (12.60) and Jevene Bennett (12.60) finished one-two in Class Three.

Vere's Deandre Whitehorne (12.49) prevailed in the girls' Class Four 100m over St. Andrew's Hallie Green (12.91) and Kimberly Golding of Alpha (12.91).

Richard Powell of Edith Dalton-James (10.95) beat Khorey Spaulding of St. George's (10.98) in the boys' Class Two event while Calabar's pair of Earl Lee (11.44) and Roger Palmer (11.45) came out on top in Class Three.

Sean Robinson of Calabar won the boys' Class Two 800m in 1:59.14 ahead of Garnet Gordon of Vere (2:01.68) while KC's Andre Pickersgill (2:03.99) took Class Three over Calabar's Ravion Robinson (2:04.00).

In the Class One boys' 1500m, Bengallo Morrison of JC (4:02.95) turned the tables on Calabar's Andre Thomas (4:02.99) who earlier in the day, beat him in the 800m.

TOP-TWO PLACES

Vere's pair of Donette Brown (4:56.19) and Shauna Campbell (5:04.66) took the top-two places in the girls' 1500m Class Three while Isheka Brown of Vauxhall (4:53.23) beat Sanchia Lee of St. Andrew (5:24.84) in Class Two.

Vere's Kimberly Williams (5.63m) took the girls' long jump open over St. Jago's Sashakay Mathias (5.57m), while Kenneth Sylvester of Racers Track Club (15.97m) beat Wolmer's Julian Reid (14.58m) and Nicholas Gordon of Calabar (14.36m) in the triple jump open.

Sean Pitter (3:51.83) beat U-Tech/MVP's pair of Evan Allen (3:55.60) and Andre Drummond (3:56.01) in the men's 1500m while G.C. Foster's Marrecia James (4:52.03) took the women's event over Charlene Smith of UWI, Cave Hill campus in Barbados (5:00.18).

Jermaine Jackson of Excelsior Community College took the men's high jump with a leap of 2.16 metres over UWI's Tarik Edwards (2.03m).
