A MAN WHO stole $363 worth of saltfish from his employer, PriceSmart,(the supermarket on Red Hills Rd) blamed hunger for his actions when he appeared before Resident Magistrate Martin Gayle on Friday.
Rohan Stewart, 23, of a Waterloo Road address, pleaded guilty to the charge of simple larceny when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.
The court heard that on January 26, around 8:30 pm, Stewart, a meat chopper in the store's meat section, set off the detectors posted at the store's exit when he attempted to leave.
He was asked by the security guard to declare what he had in his possession, but told him that he had nothing.
He lifted his shirt to prove this but a bulge in the front of his pants 'gave him away'. Realising that he had been caught, he reportedly told the security guard, "is a piece a saltfish mi tief fi go cook."
The store managers were alerted and Stewart was taken to a room where he took another parcel of saltfish from his shirt.
When cautioned by police officers who were called to the scene, he allegedly said, "officer a hungry mi hungry."
When he appeared before Resident Magistrate Martin Gayle, he again told the court that he only did it because he was hungry. RM. Gayle chided the accused for his behaviour, telling him, " now you lose you job over a piece of saltfish"
He was ordered to serve one day's community service and told that he would be washing cars until 5 p.m. Friday evening.
