THE EDITOR, Madam:
As a citizen of this country, which, ridiculous as it may sound, I only discovered recently, I have very serious issues with the negative occurrences in this country.
The primary function of a country is to provide and facilitate an environment in which human beings can live and maximise their fullest potential, ultimately leading to wealth of whatever nature that is either spiritual, physical, mental, economical or psychological.
The function of an elected body in government is to do whatever is necessary to ensure the promotion and manifestation of this process.
How can we accomplish this? Firstly, the persons who are in office and are prospective members of Parliament need to analyse themselves and their true/genuine reason for participating in politics at a leadership level.
It seems to me that many of our politicians have gone into politics for (according to Wilmot Perkins the number one talk show host in Jamaica) scarce benefits and spoils, figuratively speaking.
Thus in the novel Things Fall Apart, the author Chinua Achebe in his introductory statement says and I quote:
"Things fall apart, the centre cannot hold; mere anarchy is loosed upon the world."
This quotation is indicative of what has been happening in the country.
For years I have heard the relentless efforts on Perkins' part to assist in engendering a new view for the political activists, but to no avail.
It is time to listen!
