KERRON CAINE'S 23-POINT, 11-rebound performance fired red-hot Wolmer's Boys to seven successive wins in the KFC-sponsored ISSA High School Basketball Southern Conference, following a 56-46 victory over Excelsior at the National Stadium on Tuesday.
Caine racked up an impressive 13-point first quarter to claim their first win of the second round following a very comfortable 21-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Determined to keep his team in contention, Excelsior's Deameatrio Wade, who had 20 points and 17 rebounds, would spark a run. An 11-point second quarter saw his team steadily cut into the lead despite facing a bigger Wolmer's line-up.
Stepping up their defensive effort they outscored Wolmer's 10-15 in the second quarter and 8-10 in the third quarter. With a minute left to go in the third quarter, they had cut the lead to 42-39.
"I wasn't really concerned the team was not going to be perfect, we set the tone early and then managed to play the lapses. Fortunately we still had enough of a cushion to see out the game," assessed Wolmer's coach Howard Harvey.
In the final quarter, the effort of a quickly tiring Wade would not be enough to keep his team in the game.
"Everybody expected Wolmer's to come and blow us out but as you saw today the scores certainly did not reflect that," said Excelsior coach Rohan Robinson. "But at the end of the day endurance got us out, we had basically a six-player rotation and it was not enough," he added.
In the day's other game St. Catherine survived an early scare to get by St. George's 69-58. Noel Wright top scored in the encounter with 21 points and six rebounds.
In today's encounters at the stadium courts at 3:30 p.m., St. Jago, also unbeaten, will challenge Kingston College, while Tivoli play Jamaica College.
