Damian 'Junior Gong' Marley joined the slew of double-winners at the 48th Annual Grammy Awards yesterday at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, United States Of America when he bagged the awards for Best Reggae Album and Best Urban/Alternative Performance.
Marley, who had been the first reggae artiste to be nominated outside of the reggae category, let alone win, said; "this is new ground for reggae," as he accepted the award for Best Urban/Alternative Performance for the title track of his album Welcome to Jamrock ...
Other artistes who had been contesting the category for Best Reggae Album included Burning Spear with Our Music, Sean Paul's The Trinity, Shaggy's Clothes Drop and Black Gold and Green by Third World.
Marley, who had in an earlier interview with THE STAR expressed his desire that "Reggae music should get nominated in other categories, and mi woulda like fi si a reggae album win di overall album of the year." He might be one step closer to fulfilling his dream, as he beat international artistes like Mos Def, Gorillaz, Floetry and Van Hunt to win the Best Urban/Alternative Performance category.
According to Marley in that interview it was generally a good time for reggae music right now, as the genre had been breaking down barriers and gaining more respect worldwide.
