These Streets - 'mus buss'

Tanya Stephens - FILE

TODAY THE STAR continues one of its latest features, a weekly review of new songs. Three musical minds with different tastes will analyse each song and will grade it on vocal ability, lyrics, musical arrangement and appeal. Songs that make the grade will be given our stamp of approval, Mus Buss. For those songs that fail, well they will be dumped under the Caan Buss heading.

The three reviewers welcome feedback from the artistes and the public about the column. Send your comments to bussdem@hotmail.com.

This week we review Tanya Stephens' new single These Streets from her upcoming album Rebelution. Here, Tanya pleads with her thug-love to realise that "these streets don't love you like I do."

Queen: I love it, I love it , I love it. From the rhythm to the 'pun' on the lyrics, this song really grabs my attention.

TAE: Yow, deh tune yah bad. The way how Tanya's lyrics and rhymes are tightly knitted and the way she plays on certain words just drives home the point. Listeners will definitely be able to identify with her pain.

SOMETHING DIFFERENT

xXx: What can I say, Tanya has done it again. I agree with what you guys say. Me never get tired of Tanya yet. I like the part of the song where she say: "I woulddah love it if you treat me like di club/ be up innah me whole night, just a bump and grind and rub ..." Me like the way she emphasise the 'whole' yuh just know what she a talk bout. I tell you the song bad without being too outrageous and slack.

Queen: I am sure every woman has met a man like the one Tanya sings about and that's what makes the song so good. She has said so well what all of us have felt and I believe this is an important part of a hit song. Your audience must be able to identify with the topic. In addition, the freshness of the topic also makes the song stand out.

TAE: Tanya always comes with something different and creative and her talent to put her lyrics together in a poetic and meaningful way, just adds flavour to the song. This also helps to stir additional interest in her music.

xXx: Me love the melody pon di song. Plus me know wha she a talk bout, the whole thug thing; trying to get them fi leave the street, bredrin and car fixing behind and come explore some things wid you. Trust me, it real. Me can't wait fi di album ... my God! This Mus Buss! Big up Tanya.

Queen: Need I say more? It Mus Buss.

TAE: Deh one yah look like it ah go sell off. Mus Buss signal fi it. Straight.
